Air and its components – basics
How it works
Air is a mixture of gases that consists mainly of nitrogen (ca. 78 %), oxygen (ca. 21 %), argon (ca. 0.9 %) and carbon dioxide (ca. 0.04 %). In addition, air contains small amounts of other gases and water vapour. These common components are colourless and odourless. Air is important for humans, animals and many other living beings, because oxygen is needed for breathing. The composition of air at sea level is relatively constant. Air can become polluted, for example by smoke or exhaust fumes.
Note
Air consists of several gases, mainly nitrogen and oxygen. It is essential for humans and animals. The components are colourless and odourless; pollutants or changed proportions, for example more water vapour, smoke or exhaust fumes, can influence the properties of air.

An example
Which gas makes up the largest proportion of the air?
The largest proportion of air is nitrogen. Explanation: Nitrogen makes up about 78 % of the air and is therefore the most common gas in the air mixture.
