Solid, liquid and gaseous – basic principles

How it works

In everyday life, we often encounter substances in three states of matter: solid, liquid and gaseous. Each state has typical properties: solids retain their shape and volume, liquids retain their volume but adapt to the shape of the container, and gases fill the available space. Changes of state include, for example, melting, freezing, evaporating, boiling and condensing. The state of matter depends on the temperature; pressure can also influence it.

Note
The state of matter of a substance determines how it behaves: solids have a fixed shape, liquids adapt to the shape of the container, gases spread throughout the available space.

An example

How can you tell that water is in the solid state?

Water is solid when it remains a fixed shape as ice and does not flow. You can see this, for example, from the fact that an ice cube keeps its shape.
