Safety and hazard symbols – basics and application

How it works

In chemistry lessons, safety is especially important. Hazard symbols on packages and containers indicate which risks a substance poses, for example whether it is toxic, corrosive or highly flammable. There are various symbols that are understood internationally. Among the most important are symbols for toxicity, flammability, corrosive effect, environmental hazard and explosion hazard. Anyone working with chemicals must know and observe these symbols in order to avoid accidents. Protective measures such as gloves, safety goggles and the correct behaviour in an emergency are important components of safety.

Note
Hazard symbols give clear indications of the dangers of a substance; they must be observed in order to protect yourself and others. Each symbol stands for a specific danger and requires specific protective measures.

An example

Which hazard symbol warns of toxic substances?

The symbol with the skull and crossbones stands for toxicity. It shows that the substance can be harmful or deadly even in small amounts. Therefore, one must be especially careful and avoid direct contact.
