Observing material properties – basics
How it works
Material properties are characteristic features by which one can distinguish different substances. Important material properties include color, odor, physical state, solubility, density, magnetizability, electrical conductivity, and combustibility. Taste can also serve to describe foods, but in chemistry lessons unknown substances are never tasted. These properties can be determined by observation, measurement, or simple safe experiments. Material properties help to identify substances, compare them, and select them for specific purposes. Some properties can be recognized without aids, while others require equipment or simple test setups.
