Radioactivity and Types of Radiation – Basic Principles
How it works
Radioactivity is the spontaneous decay of unstable atomic nuclei accompanied by the emission of radiation. There are three main types of radioactive radiation: alpha, beta and gamma radiation. Alpha radiation consists of helium nuclei, beta radiation of fast electrons or positrons, and gamma radiation of high-energy photons. The types of radiation differ in range, penetrating power and biological effect. Radioactive substances occur naturally and artificially. The decay is random, but statistically predictable for many atoms. Radiation protection is important because ionising radiation can damage cells.
Alpha, beta and gamma radiation differ in particle type, range, penetrating power and degree of danger. Their properties determine suitable protective measures and applications.
