Electric charge and current – basic principles
How it works
Electric charge is a fundamental property of matter that occurs in positive and negative forms. Like charges repel each other, unlike charges attract each other. Electric current is the directed movement of charge carriers (usually electrons) through a conductor. Current intensity indicates how much charge flows through a conductor per unit time. The unit of charge is the coulomb (C), and the unit of current intensity is the ampere (A). A closed circuit is necessary for current flow.
Note
Electric current arises when electric charge carriers move in a closed circuit. Current intensity measures the charge transported per unit time: I = Q/t.

An example
Which statement best describes what is meant by electric current?
Electric current is the directed movement of electric charge carriers, usually electrons, through a conductor. This distinguishes it from static charge, in which the charge does not move.
