Integers and number line

How it works

Negative numbers lie to the left of zero. Subtraction corresponds to adding the opposite number. For temperature or altitude changes, the sign indicates the direction.

Note
a−b=a+(−b); Distance between two numbers=|a−b|.

An example

In the morning it is −4 °C. The temperature rises by 2 °C. How warm is it then? Give the result in °C.

Initial value + change = −4+2. Result: -2 °C.
