Work and Energy – Basic Principles

How it works

Work in physics is the product of force and distance when the force acts along the distance (W = F·s). Energy is the ability of a body to do work. There are various forms of energy such as kinetic and potential energy. Energy can be transformed, but not destroyed (law of conservation of energy). The unit of work and energy is the joule (J).

Note
Work is done when a force moves a body along a distance, where the following applies: Work = force × distance. Energy is the ability to do work and remains conserved in a closed system.

An example

What unit does the physical quantity work have?

Work is measured in joules (J) because 1 joule corresponds to the work done when a force of 1 newton moves a body 1 meters.
