Conductors, insulators and electrical safety – fundamentals

How it works

Conductors are substances that conduct electric current well, such as metals. Insulators conduct current hardly or not at all, e.g. plastic or glass. Electrical safety means not accidentally closing the circuit and protecting oneself from electric shocks. In everyday life, insulators are used to protect people from dangerous current, e.g. in cable sheaths. The distinction between conductors and insulators is important for the safe handling of electricity.

Note
Conductors let electric current pass through easily, insulators prevent the flow of current almost completely. For electrical safety, insulators are used to prevent dangerous paths for current.

An example

Which of the following substances is a typical insulator?

Glass is a typical insulator because it does not conduct electric current. Metals such as copper, on the other hand, are conductors.
