Temperature and thermometers – basic principles
How it works
Temperature is a measure of how warm or cold an object is. It is measured in degrees Celsius (°C). A thermometer is a measuring instrument that displays the temperature. There are different types of thermometers, e.g. liquid thermometers and digital thermometers. Temperature measurement is important for everyday life and science. The scale of the thermometer is divided into equal steps. Water freezes at 0 °C and boils at 100 °C (under normal pressure).
Note
Temperature is measured with thermometers and given in degrees Celsius. The scale of a thermometer shows the temperature as a numerical value. Different types of thermometers work according to different principles, but they show the same physical quantity.

An example
What does a thermometer show when it is placed in a cup of hot water that is 70 °C warm?
The thermometer shows 70 °C, because it measures the temperature of the water.
