Lengths and time measurement – basic principles
How it works
Length measurement is the determination of a distance with suitable measuring instruments such as a ruler or measuring tape. The base unit of length in the SI system is the metre (m). Time measurement records the duration of a process, usually with a stopwatch or clock. The SI unit of time is the second (s). Measured values are always given with a unit. Conversions between units (e.g. cm to m) are important. Measurement errors can arise from inaccurate reading or incorrect devices. Precise work and observing the correct unit are fundamental.
Lengths and times are measured with suitable measuring instruments and are always given with the correct unit; conversions between units must be carried out correctly.
