Assessing biological statements and evidence – basic principles

How it works

In biology, statements are supported by empirical evidence from observations, experiments, or data analyses. Scientific statements must be verifiable, falsifiable, and understandable. It is important to distinguish between hypotheses, theories, and opinions. The quality of evidence depends on the method, reproducibility, and independence of the source. Critical questioning and recognizing fallacies or insufficient evidence are central competencies.

Note
Biological statements should be assessed on the basis of understandable, verifiable, and objective evidence. It must be checked whether the evidence actually supports the statement and whether alternative explanations have been ruled out.

An example

A study claims: 'Plants grow faster with music.' The study was conducted on only three plants. How should this statement be assessed?

The statement should be viewed critically, because the small sample size (only three plants) does not allow reliable conclusions. The statement is therefore not sufficiently supported by evidence.
