Variation and Mutation – Basic Principles
How it works
Variation refers to the differences between individuals of a species that arise through genetic differences (e.g. through recombination during reproduction) and environmental influences. Mutations are permanent changes in the genetic material (DNA) that can occur spontaneously or through external influences (e.g. radiation, chemicals). Mutations can be neutral, harmful or beneficial and are passed on to offspring if they occur in germ cells. Variation is the basis for evolution and adaptation.
Note
Individual differences within a species arise through genetic variation and mutations; mutations permanently change the genetic material and can be inherited if they occur in germ cells.

An example
What is meant by a mutation in the biological sense?
A mutation is a permanent change in the DNA, that is, the genetic material of an organism. It can arise spontaneously or through external influences and is inherited if it occurs in germ cells.
