Data, frequencies and combinatorics
How it works
The absolute frequency counts observations. The mean distributes the sum evenly over all values. When independent choices are combined, their counts are multiplied.
Note
Mean = Sum / Count; combinations with two levels = m·n.
Mean = Sum / Count; combinations with two levels = m·n.
An example
Four children collect 5, 7, 9 and 11 points. What is the mean? Give only the requested number.
Sum = 32. Divide by four: (5+7+9+11) : 4. Result: 8.
