Natural numbers and place values
How it works
Digits get their value from their position. In the decimal system, each place is worth ten times as much as the place to the right. When rounding, the first digit to be dropped decides: from 5 upwards, round up.
Note
Place value = digit · power of ten; Rounding: round 0–4 down, 5–9 up.
Place value = digit · power of ten; Rounding: round 0–4 down, 5–9 up.
An example
Round 41394 to the next 1000. Give only the requested number.
Consider the digit to the right of the 1000th place. If it is at least 5, round up; otherwise, round down. Result: 41000.
